Everything about outdoor advertising in Nijmegen

Having a flag printed: visible above everything else

A flag hangs high and moves. This makes it stand out from across a square, from a roundabout or from the car park, in places where a sign or banner easily disappears behind people and cars. Businesses use a flag to point out the entrance, sports clubs hang them along the pitch, and at an opening or event a row of flags immediately shows that something is happening. All flags in this category are printed full colour in your own design.

Which flag suits your location?

  • Mast flagfor a flagpole. The upright model (the classic upright flag, taller than it is wide) is available in five sizes, the straight model in six. You choose whether the finish is on the left or right.
  • Wall flaga straight model for a wall bracket, in four sizes from 100 x 70 to 225 x 150 cm, finished with tape, cord and loop.
  • Banner flaga narrow, tall flag with a tunnel at the top for a banner holder. If you're looking for a banner flag or flag banner that stays taut, this is the one: five sizes, from 100 x 200 to 100 x 400 cm.
  • Flag in your own sizeupright or straight, in your own size. Up to 3 metres wide is made from one piece; wider than that, we join sections together.
  • Beachflagsfreestanding flags on a pole with a base, which stay unfurled even without wind. You'll find all the shapes under beachflags.

For a boat, the golf course or a national flag, see boat, golf and national flags.

Choosing the right size

With a mast flag, the size depends on the length of the mast. A commonly used rule of thumb is that the flag should be about a quarter to a third of the mast height: smaller looks lost, larger drags along the mast when there's little wind. With a wall flag, pay attention to the clearance underneath the flag, so pedestrians don't walk into it. And think about the distance from which people will see your flag. Someone driving past reads a logo and a couple of words, not a sentence. The less text, the larger you can make it.

If none of the standard sizes fit, for example because you have an existing mast or holder, choose the flag in your own size and enter the dimensions you need.

Flag fabric, reverse side and lifespan

You can choose from five flag fabrics, including a recycled and a biodegradable option. The fabrics have a fire certificate (EN-13501: B-s1, d0), so you can also use them indoors in a hall or at a trade fair. Flag fabric is thin and lets the ink through: on the reverse side you'll see your design mirrored. A logo remains recognisable, but text reads back to front there. Bear this in mind if your flag will be viewed from both sides.

A flag is a consumable item. Wind makes the fabric flap continuously, which wears the colour and edges; expect a lifespan of less than two years when used outdoors. Bring your flag inside during storms, let a wet flag dry before rolling it up, and store it dry and dark. If you want it flying all year round, it's wise to order a second one straight away so you can alternate them.

Hanging: tape, hooks and accessories

How a flag hangs on the mast determines how long it stays intact. A mast flag comes with tape and hooks in white or black, with thread in the same colour. The banner flag has a tunnel for a banner holder, and a wall flag hangs from a wall bracket with tape, cord and loop. For the flag in your own size, you can choose a Flagfix carabiner, which reduces the strain on the flag and mast. In the configurator, you'll see per flag which accessories you can order with it, such as a mast ring, counterweight, wall bracket or banner holder set.

Flags in Nijmegen: check the rules first

A flag on your own facade or mast counts as advertising, and the council has rules for that. Temporary advertising is allowed for a maximum of 31 days per year; if it hangs longer, it's considered permanent advertising and a permit is often required. No advertising is allowed along motorways. On the outdoor advertising page you can read the main rules; always check with the council for your own location. The same applies to customers in Lent, Wijchen, Beuningen or Groesbeek, where each council has its own rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I come to Nijmegen for advice on a flag?

Yes. Drop by at Betouwstraat 40 in the centre of Nijmegen. We'll look together at your mast or facade, the size that suits it and which flag fabric works best. You can then configure your order online, or we can help you with it on the spot.

Can I order the flag of Nijmegen from you?

Yes. Choose the type of flag and the size, for example a mast flag or a flag in your own size, and state in your order that it should be the flag of Nijmegen. We'll prepare the design for you and you'll see a proof first.

Do you also deliver flags outside Nijmegen?

Yes. We arrange production and have your flag delivered to the address you choose. This could be at your business in Wijchen or Arnhem, at a sports park in Beuningen or directly at your event location.

What size flag suits my flagpole?

A commonly used rule of thumb is that the flag should be about a quarter to a third of the mast height. A mast flag is available upright in five sizes and straight in six. If no standard size fits, choose the flag in your own size.

What's the difference between a mast flag and a banner flag?

A mast flag hangs from the line of a flagpole with tape and hooks and flies freely. A banner flag has a tunnel at the top for a banner holder, which keeps it hanging taut and fully legible, even when there's little wind.

Can my design also be seen on the reverse of the flag?

Yes, but mirrored. Flag fabric is thin and lets the ink through, so the reverse side shows your design reversed. A logo remains recognisable, but text reads back to front. Bear this in mind if people will see your flag from both sides.

How long does a flag last?

Outdoors, a flag usually lasts less than two years, because wind makes the fabric flap continuously. Bring it inside during storms, let it dry before rolling it up, and for permanent use, order a second one to alternate with.

Can I just hang up an advertising flag in Nijmegen?

Not always. Temporary advertising is allowed for a maximum of 31 days per year; longer counts as permanent advertising and often requires a permit. No advertising is allowed along motorways. Read the rules on our outdoor advertising page and always check your location with the council.
